Dumfries handed No 24 shirt at Real Madrid

Dumfries will wear the No 24 shirt at Real Madrid after the club’s squad numbers were confirmed. The number became available because Dean Huijsen, its previous holder, has switched to No 4, which had belonged to David Alaba.

The defender wore No 2 at his former club and that shirt was also vacant following Dani Carvajal’s departure. However, Raúl Asencio has taken No 2, leaving Dumfries to follow Huijsen and several notable former Madrid players in wearing 24. VI lists Claude Makélélé, Sami Khedira and Dani Ceballos among the number’s previous owners.

Another new arrival, Yan Diomandé, will wear No 25 after joining for a fee described by VI as comfortably exceeding €100 million. Vinícius Júnior retains the No 7 shirt after extending his contract last week, while Endrick has reclaimed No 9 following his return from a loan spell that lasted several months last year. The assignments place Dumfries and Diomandé next to each other numerically in Madrid’s squad list.
