Driessen identifies three PSV players who may have caught Xavi’s eye

Valentijn Driessen believes three PSV players may have strengthened their case for Oranje consideration in front of national-team coach Xavi during the Eredivisie meeting with Ajax. Writing in De Telegraaf, as relayed by Voetbalzone, Driessen named Ruben van Bommel, Lutsharel Geertruida and Guus Til as the players likely to have caught Xavi’s attention.

PSV extended a 2-1 half-time lead to win 3-1 at the Johan Cruijff ArenA, although Driessen was heavily critical of the overall standard. He argued that the game deteriorated after the interval as chances and goals became scarce, with neither side able to lift the quality.

Even so, all three of Driessen’s selections were involved in PSV’s goals. He reserved particular praise for Van Bommel, who he said remained a constant threat and has developed rapidly since returning from a serious knee injury. The winger’s performance came with Xavi watching from the stands in Amsterdam.

Driessen also raised a concern about Van Bommel’s temperament following his involvement in a confrontation. While accepting that the PSV attacker is regularly subjected to rough treatment, the columnist argued that he does not need to cross the line to perform at his best. Any suggestion that Xavi has actually added the trio to his plans remains Driessen’s interpretation rather than a confirmed selection decision.
