De Graafschap have completed the signing of Finnish attacker Toivo Mero from HJK Helsinki. The 18-year-old has joined the first-team squad with immediate effect, signing a three-season contract that includes a club option for a further year.

Mero is primarily a left winger and spent his entire development career with HJK. He made his Veikkausliiga debut in 2025 and has also played for HJK Klubi 04 in recent seasons. At international level, the forward has represented Finland across several youth age groups.

Technical manager Berry Powel said Mero’s pace, dynamism and ability in individual situations can add a threat to De Graafschap’s attack. He also stressed that the club intends to give the teenager the time and space required to continue his development, describing him as a good match for the team’s preferred playing style.

Mero said he had heard positive accounts of De Graafschap, the coach and the club’s approach before deciding to make the move. “It feels very good to be here,” he told De Graafschap’s official website. The winger added that he is looking forward to playing in the stadium, performing for the supporters and showing how his qualities can help the team.
