Cruijff backs Ajax strikers Tolu and Leonardo to deliver goals
The Ajax technical director says the two forwards offer different qualities and insists Leonardo’s missed chances are also evidence of encouraging positioning.
Ajax technical director Cruijff has explained that Tolu and Leonardo were recruited to give the coach different attacking options. He believes a squad needs several types of striker because the demands change from one match to another.
Speaking to Voetbal International, Cruijff said one forward may be required for his aerial strength, while another can offer sharp movement and quick finishing. Tolu has made a positive start, according to the report, but Leonardo is finding things more difficult at present.
Cruijff nevertheless sees encouragement in Leonardo’s ability to reach scoring positions. Although the forward has passed up a number of opportunities, the director argued that regularly receiving chances is preferable to being absent from dangerous areas. “He is always in the right place,” Cruijff told Voetbal International, suggesting the goals should follow if that positioning continues.
The Ajax executive remains convinced both signings will become productive scorers. Cruijff acknowledged that their chances are not always being converted yet, but described the pair as a guarantee of goals based on his assessment of their qualities. He also called for patience, particularly with young players, and pointed to the strikers’ previous scoring statistics as another reason for confidence.
