Corinthians dismissed head coach Fernando Diniz following a 2-1 defeat by Internacional in the Brazilian league. The result represented another blow to the club’s fight against relegation and was followed swiftly by confirmation that Diniz and his coaching staff had left their positions.

Internacional took an early lead when Alan Patrick supplied Vitinho, who converted to make it 1-0. Corinthians created several promising opportunities after the interval, but Memphis Depay passed up their clearest chance 13 minutes into the second half.

The Dutch forward received a ball from the left only a few metres from goal, but his attempt struck the post. It was the third time Corinthians had hit the woodwork during the match. Internacional subsequently doubled their advantage before André headed in a late reply for the visitors, which was not enough to change the outcome.

Diniz’s departure came after a difficult run that included seven defeats in the Brazilian competition, as well as elimination from the Copa Libertadores against Estudiantes. Corinthians announced that the coach’s wider backroom team had also departed, bringing his spell in charge to an end immediately after the loss.
