Corinthians coach Diniz has expressed his disappointment after the Brazilian club failed to reach an agreement with Memphis. Brazilian media had reported for several weeks that negotiations were at an advanced stage, but Corinthians subsequently announced that no deal had been completed.
According to Voetbal International, the club’s owner stopped the proposed agreement at the last moment. Speaking after Corinthians faced Rosario Central in the last 16 of the Copa Libertadores, Diniz said he had wanted to continue working with Memphis and had enjoyed a strong relationship with him. The coach indicated that the arrangement had been considered almost settled inside the club, making the eventual outcome particularly difficult for the squad and staff.
Diniz added that Corinthians’ players responded positively on the pitch, using the disappointment as motivation against Rosario Central. He said the situation had affected everybody at the club but praised his team for turning that frustration into extra effort during the match.
A longer stay may not yet be completely off the table. Voetbal International cites UOL Esporte as reporting that Corinthians and Memphis have resumed contact in an attempt to find a solution. The club still has an outstanding debt to the player, while the possibility of an extension has reportedly not been ruled out. Any renewed agreement remains uncertain at this stage.
