Bosz defends Van Bommel after controversial challenge against Ajax

PSV coach Peter Bosz has defended Ruben van Bommel after the winger’s heavy challenge on Aaron Bouwman caused a late confrontation during PSV’s victory away to Ajax. Van Bommel caught the defender in the head with his hip while contesting a bouncing ball, but referee Sander van der Eijk showed only a yellow card and VAR Pol van Boekel did not intervene.

The decision drew strong criticism in ESPN’s studio. Analysts Arnold Bruggink and Marciano Vink believed Van Bommel should have been sent off, while Hugo Borst went further by questioning the player’s behaviour, suggesting he needed psychological help and referring to his family. Ajax players Davy Klaassen and Youri Baas also considered the incident worthy of a red card.

Bosz declined to give a verdict on the appropriate punishment but objected to the personal nature of the reaction. As reported by Voetbal International, the PSV coach said families should not be dragged into the discussion. He explained that Van Bommel appeared to turn his body at the last moment to avoid a head-to-head collision, although he acknowledged that the resulting impact looked serious on television.

Van Bommel did not speak to the media after the game. Bosz said the winger was distressed in the dressing room and was the only PSV player not celebrating, because hurting Bouwman had not been his intention. The coach also condemned the late confrontations on the pitch, but praised PSV’s overall display and the contribution of the substitutes, including goalscorer Esmir Bajraktarevic.
