Away supporters cleared to attend Cambuur’s home game against NEC
The Leeuwarden authorities have approved the return of visiting fans, with additional safety measures planned following the fireworks incidents against Feyenoord.
Away supporters will be allowed to attend SC Cambuur’s forthcoming Eredivisie home match against NEC. The decision was taken following talks involving the club, the mayor, police and the Public Prosecution Service.
Additional netting will be installed around the away section in response to the disorder during Cambuur’s home game against Feyenoord two weeks earlier. Seven people were injured after visiting supporters set off large amounts of fireworks and threw flares on to the pitch and towards a family stand. The reported injuries included burns, hearing damage and eye injuries.
Cambuur subsequently staged their home fixture against FC Twente without away fans. The club said the local authorities now consider the return of visiting supporters possible because of the agreements reached and the measures Cambuur has taken. Those precautions will include both visible and less visible steps intended to improve safety and prevent a repeat.
The club will continue assessing whether further measures are required. Cambuur have filed a police complaint over the Feyenoord incident, while the Rotterdam club have identified several dozen people who could potentially receive stadium bans. The NEC match is scheduled for Saturday at 21:00.
