Ard van Peppen says Johan Derksen criticism shaped an unfair public image
The former RKC Waalwijk and Roda JC left-back believes harsh television analysis had a lasting effect on how his career was perceived.
Former Eredivisie defender Ard van Peppen says Johan Derksen’s criticism had a significant influence on the public perception of him during his playing career. The 41-year-old believes the picture created by Derksen’s television commentary did not reflect his actual level or achievements.
Van Peppen acknowledged that he fell short when compared with elite left-backs such as Paolo Maldini and Marcelo. However, he argued that he was still a capable professional relative to many of his peers. According to FCUpdate, Van Peppen said Derksen’s platform gave his blunt assessments considerable reach and created an image “that does not correspond with the facts”.
Derksen repeatedly mocked the defender on Voetbal Inside, questioning his decision-making and describing him as a poor player. Van Peppen also spoke more broadly about the unpleasant side of professional football, including the way players can be approached by adult supporters. He said he does not miss the superficiality surrounding the game.
Despite those experiences, Van Peppen looks back with satisfaction on a career in which he won three championships and secured promotion twice through the play-offs. Voetbalzone reports that he made more than 400 official appearances in Dutch professional football before ending his career with Roda JC in 2018. He has since become involved in extreme trail running and also uses his sporting experience to support organisations and companies.
