Ajax will play Bayern Munich on 5 January in the opening match at Kenya’s new national stadium. The friendly will inaugurate the Raila Odinga International Stadium in Nairobi, which has a capacity of 60,000 spectators.

The venue is scheduled to stage matches at the Africa Cup the following summer. Ajax described its invitation as an honour and said the occasion would bring together two major names in international football at an important moment for Kenya ahead of the tournament.

Organisers regard the meeting between Ajax and Bayern, who have won the Champions League four and six times respectively, as a significant football event for East Africa. Bayern executive Rouven Kasper said the trip would give the German club another opportunity to strengthen its relationship with supporters across the continent and allow fans to experience the team at close quarters.

The match will complete Ajax’s preparations for the second half of the season. The Amsterdam side are due to return to Eredivisie action four days later against Willem II. Before the winter break, Ajax will conclude the first half of their campaign with an away league fixture against Go Ahead Eagles on 20 December.
