Ajax supporters angered by paywall for FC Sion tie
The Conference League play-off away leg will cost €4.99 to stream on KIJK after the Swiss club sold the broadcast rights separately.
Ajax supporters have voiced frustration after learning that Thursday evening’s Conference League play-off away leg against FC Sion will not be shown by Ziggo Sport. According to FCUpdate, the game will instead be available through KIJK, which is charging €4.99 for access to its livestream.
Ziggo Sport said the Conference League play-offs are not included in its UEFA rights package. That left FC Sion, as the home club, free to sell the broadcasting rights itself, with KIJK ultimately securing them. Despite that explanation, many Ajax fans directed their criticism at Ziggo on X and Instagram, pointing in particular to the company’s position as the Amsterdam club’s main sponsor.
The need to make another separate payment was a recurring complaint. Some supporters said they already pay for Ziggo specifically to watch football, while others compared the arrangement to the wider fragmentation of content across multiple streaming services. One response quoted by FCUpdate described pay-per-view as “scandalous”, while another expressed concern that similar one-off payment models could become more common.
Not every reaction blamed Ajax or Ziggo. FCUpdate noted that some fans acknowledged FC Sion controlled the rights and was entitled to sell them. Nevertheless, the overall response reported by the outlet was dominated by anger over the paywall and the prospect of supporters requiring yet another platform to watch their team in European competition.
