Ajax defender Aaron Bouwman sent for hospital scans after PSV collision
The centre-back experienced rib pain and breathing difficulties following a heavy challenge by Ruben van Bommel during Ajax’s 3-1 defeat.
Ajax defender Aaron Bouwman was taken to hospital for scans after suffering breathing difficulties during his side’s 3-1 Eredivisie defeat at home to PSV. The extent of his injury was not yet known after the match.
Bouwman was hurt in a forceful collision with PSV winger Ruben van Bommel in the 80th minute. Van Bommel arrived late as the Ajax player stooped to head the ball, leaving Bouwman on the ground and prompting an immediate confrontation between players from both teams.
Ajax coach Míchel Sánchez said at his post-match press conference that Bouwman was experiencing pain around his ribs and having trouble breathing. Voetbalzone quoted the coach as saying: “The most important thing is Aaron’s health.” Sánchez confirmed that the defender was travelling to hospital to undergo further examination.
Referee Sander van Eijk showed Van Bommel a yellow card for the challenge. According to Voetbalzone, refereeing chief Raymond van Meenen subsequently indicated through ESPN analyst Hugo Borst that the PSV player should instead have been sent off. Ajax were awaiting the results of Bouwman’s scans before providing greater clarity on his condition.
