Ajax coach Míchel says Van Bommel challenge on Bouwman deserved red

Ajax coach Míchel believes PSV attacker Ruben van Bommel should have been sent off for the challenge that left Aaron Bouwman requiring hospital checks during Saturday’s Eredivisie meeting. The incident occurred in the 80th minute, when the Ajax defender went heavily to ground following a collision with Van Bommel.
Referee Sander van der Eijk showed the PSV forward a yellow card, while VAR Pol van Boekel did not advise an on-field review. Speaking to ESPN after the match, Míchel said Van Bommel had not intended to hurt Bouwman but argued that intent should be considered separately from the outcome of the action.
Asked whether the challenge warranted a dismissal, the Ajax coach replied: “Yes, I think so.” Míchel said he believed the referee’s decision at that moment was incorrect. Refereeing chief Raymond van Meenen also concluded after the game that a red card should have been shown, according to Voetbalzone.
Míchel nevertheless stressed that Bouwman’s condition was more important than the refereeing debate. The defender was examined following the collision and then taken to hospital for further assessment. The Ajax coach said his priority was for Bouwman to recover well and expressed hope that the hospital checks would establish that he was all right.
