Ajax add experienced defender Thilo Kehrer to squad
The German international strengthens a position left short following the departures of Ko Itakura and Josip Sutalo.
Ajax have brought in Thilo Kehrer to reinforce the right side of their central defence. The Amsterdam club needed another option in that position after Ko Itakura returned to Borussia Mönchengladbach and Josip Sutalo joined Lazio on loan during the transfer window.
Kehrer gives coach Míchel Sánchez an experienced alternative alongside Aaron Bouwman. Technical director Jordi Cruijff highlighted the defender’s mentality and familiarity with performing under pressure. Cruijff described him as “an extremely professional and good player”, according to Voetbal International, and said his arrival would create healthy competition within the back line.
The German came through Schalke 04’s academy and spent more than two seasons with the club’s first team. Paris Saint-Germain subsequently signed him for €37 million, and he went on to make 128 appearances for the French side.
Kehrer moved to West Ham United in the summer of 2022 before joining AS Monaco, initially on loan and later through a permanent transfer. He has also been capped 28 times by Germany. Ajax now have an accomplished defensive addition with experience across several major European leagues and at international level.
